This year the Roana Bridge celebrates its hundredth anniversary, and the Municipality of Roana, in collaboration with several local associations, has organized a photographic exhibition to celebrate this extraordinary engineering work. The bridge, inaugurated in 1924, is not only a fundamental infrastructure for the viability of the Asiago Plateau, but also a symbol of union between the hamlets of the municipality.
The exhibition, entitled "100 Years of the Roana Bridge", offers the opportunity to learn about the history of this important monument through historical images, information panels and detailed descriptions. The inhabitants of the Plateau and visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the past and discover the evolution of the bridge and the context in which it was built, observing how this work has contributed to the progress and development of the local community.
The exhibition will be open every Saturday from 5 October to 21 December 2024, from 16:00 to 18:00, at the Institute of Cimbrian Culture in Roana, located in Via R. Sartori, 20.
This event is a precious opportunity to learn more about the history of one of the most iconic structures on the Plateau and to celebrate together a century of history, culture and bond between people and the territory.
The exhibition presents a vast collection of photographs documenting not only the construction of the bridge, but also the significant events that have involved it over time. From the efforts of its construction, to the most important moments in its history, until today, the bridge has been a silent witness to crucial events, becoming an integral part of the daily life of the community.
A special occasion, therefore, for all generations: from the elderly, who will be able to relive memories linked to the past, to the youngest, who will be able to discover the importance of this infrastructure through unpublished stories and images.
Don't miss the appointment with the history and culture of our territory!
THE HISTORY OF THE ROANA BRIDGE
The construction of the Roana Bridge has its roots in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the need for a large viaduct that would connect the two banks of the Valdassa, facilitating connections between the hamlets of the municipality of Roana, began to be discussed
Among the events that preceded the construction of the first bridge, it is certainly worth mentioning the "tumult of Cimbrian women" who, led by the charismatic "Togna Turca", made their voices heard loudly in the politics of the time, asking for the auction for the construction of the bridge to be announced.
The bridge was designed by the engineer Aurelio Slaviero di Asiago, and the first viaduct was inaugurated in 1906, representing a technological and social achievement. However, the bridge was blown up in 1916 during the First World War, to hinder the advance of Austro-Hungarian troops, a painful but necessary sacrifice to protect the territory.
It was rebuilt in reinforced concrete with three arches after the war, and on September 24, 1924, the new bridge was officially inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Benito Mussolini. This ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the community of Roana, with the bridge becoming not only a vital infrastructure for the viability of the plateau, but also a symbol of rebirth and resilience, capable of physically and symbolically connecting the different hamlets of the municipality.
Even today, as then, the bridge is a powerful symbol of union for the community and an important infrastructure for the local road network.
