BOOK "THE VIPER BITE"

Every morning Anita sits down at Olivetti and types type. The stories you have to transcribe are beautiful. Anita with the characters immediately gets into confidence. Time two stories and she seems to have known them for a lifetime. In each story, the protagonist on duty finds himself in an ambush, a shootout, a brawl. And Anita now knows that the character will come out of it whole, or at least with good prospects of recovery, because they are serial tales, right? Mica make him crack, the protagonist who has to come back again and again, would get even a jerk; yet with every knife blade that stutters in the darkness of an alley, to every black look of the hollow eye of the barrel of a gun, to every menacing silhouette that stands out against the door of a biscay, Anita translust and types faster to see how it will turn out."

The metallic sound of the keys resonates in the room. Sitting at her desk, Anita spat at the stories of the popular magazine Saturnalia: American mystery tales, in which detectives in long coats, between shootouts, always have a glass of whiskey in their hands. Nothing further from his world. Yet the pages of Hammett and Chandler, translated by the charming writer Sebastiano Satta Ascona, are making her discover the power of words. Anita has always been wary of newspapers and even books, which for years now have only pleased the regime. But these are new, different stories, full of truth. If Anita is now typisting, it's all her fault. Because she could accept the proposal of her beloved boyfriend Corrado, as any other young woman of 1935 would have done, instead of uttering those totally unexpected words: I'll marry you but I want to work first. And now she's with that typewriter in front of her in the company of stories that are so bad they're not, in fact, it almost seems like they're teaching her something.
Perhaps that's why, when an elderly woman is arrested for claiming that a war hero is actually a murderer, Anita is the only one who believes her. But how to do justice to someone in times when there is nothing right? Those are not years in which to give space to an objective view of reality. Fascism is booming. The villain is almost never defeated. Anita must find all the courage she has and the insight that her detective friends taught her to investigate and find out how much literature can do to free us.

Everything that passes from Alice Basso's pen shines with uniqueness and style. After creating Vani Sarca, one of the most beloved characters of recent years by readers and the press, the author returns with an unforgettable new protagonist: combative, tenacious, acute, dreamer. Against the background of a Turin in which you feel the first breaths of fascism, a story in which the mystery are not only books but masters of life.
