CARNIVAL - THE FESTIVAL OF THE WORLD
The origin of masked rites is lost in the night of time. It corresponds to the cyclical return of ancestors, who at the start of the new year manifest themselves to the living as bizarre figures, disturbing, glitzy, exaggerated to bring a wish of prosperity and fertility. Driven from the sacred citadel of Christmas and epiphany, these ancestral characters walked around the calendar, finding refuge where they did not carry trouble. Thus, in remote places on the European continent and on the most unexpected dates of the winter semester, we see the fearful scaffolding of the lupercali, the white jumpers of the ambarvali, the burleschi birboni of the saturnals...
From a rite that was, in the Christian religious regime the masquerade turned into farce, in an alleged riot of throat and licentiousness legitimized as a necessary antiphon of the subsequent Lent atonement. With this safe conduct, carnival becomes the protagonist of the popular culture of the European renaissance, of which the fortunes will follow, to finally take the steamer and go to conquer the big cities of the eastern shore of Latin America and the Louisiana, where it will begin its unstoppable stumbling on the global scene still taking place today.
