Different

Stephen Hawking could only move the eyelid of his right eye but continued to lecture and renewed his reservation for a space flight until the last minute. Twelve thousand five hundred years earlier his prehistoric avo "Romito 8", paralyzed by a bad fall, managed to live and be useful to others thanks to what was left of him intact: his teeth. Far in time and space, it bound them love for life, willpower, imagination. It's a long history of the disabled. Marked, from one end of the planet to the other, by millennia of silence, slaughter, ferocity, abandonment. But also from extraordinary human events. Of acclaimed emperors such as Claudio, immense, if blind narrators like Homer, refined armless calligraphers like Thomas Schweicker, brilliant pianists despite blindness and autism as the black slave "Blind Tom", elected polioeltics four times in the White House as Franklin D. Roosevelt, artists capable of defying millennial fears by showing their disability as Frida Kahlo, giants "dwarfs" like Antonio Gramsci, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Giacomo Leopardi... But more still millions of anonymous children of a lesser god who managed in very difficult conditions to bring out, to put it with Pope Francis, "the precious box that they had inside". Gian Antonio Stella tells the story of disability, a story of horrors, crimes, scientific errors, religious nightmares to the catastrophic illusion of perfecting man and the Nazi genocide of "useless beings", through the lives of men and women who they went through everything by resisting as best they could to hatred and contempt until they slowly managed to change the world. At least a little.
