HISTORICAL-NATURALISTIC EXCURSION TO CIMA VALBELLA WINTER VILLAGES
Sunday 30 January 2022, Asiago plateau

Given the little duty of the period, we take the opportunity to make a wonderful excursion in one of the historic theaters of the Plateau, too often underestimated. The presence of patchy snow, which tends to highlight the thousands of craters left after the heavy bombing will help us to better understand what happened in these areas during the Great War. In fact, after the battle of the Melette in 1917, the Austrians had forced the Italian troops to fall back on a new line that rested on the heights of Echar, Valbella, Col del Rosso and Col d'Ecchele. On December 23, 1917 the Austrian units of the III Army Corps managed to break through the line occupying the Valbella, then continuing beyond Melago. In January the 14th Bersaglieri Brigade tried to attack from Valbella towards Malga Stenfle without, however, obtaining results. During all these occasions the contribution of the artillery of the opposing sides was massive and fundamental. We will accompany you along the line of maximum Italian resistance to understand the events that occurred in December 1917 until the end of the World War and discover how even today the signs on the ground of those battles are evident. Cima Valbella at 1248 meters above sea level will be our panoramic point from which we can enjoy a 360 ° winter landscape on the central highland basin, towards the Grappa massif and the Venetian lagoon. We will discover little-known natural corners and how spruce and beech forests cope with winter. Wide spaces and views as far as the eye can see will not be missing.

Since there is little snow and traces of ice it is of fundamental importance to have a good mountain shoe, hiking boots with non-slip sculpted insoles. We recommend the use of trekking poles.

All activities will be conducted with the UTMOST RESPECT for the limitations related to regulations and decrees on the containment of the new coronavirus SARS-Cov-2.

READING OF THE DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY:
EASY: The itinerary takes place on forest roads, dirt roads or easy mule tracks always well indicated and without orientation problems in cases of fog or bad weather. The differences in height are contained within 250-300 meters and the length of the itinerary is within three hours. These are somewhat long walks that require a sports hiking shoe, not necessarily the pedula or the boot.
EASY/ MEDIUM: The itinerary takes place on forest roads, dirt roads or easy mule tracks always well indicated. The differences in height are contained within 250-400 meters and the length of the itinerary is within 3 - 5 HOURS. These are somewhat long walks that require a sports hiking shoe or boot.
MEDIUM: The itinerary definitely exceeds three hours, it is more complex, it takes place on a path with some challenging climbs or descents but can be overcome without the support of mountaineering equipment. The terrain may be bumpy or lack signals. The maximum difference in height remains within 400 meters.
MEDIUM / CHALLENGING: The itinerary definitely exceeds three hours, it is complex for the difference in height that can reach 700 meters or for the length of the walk up to 6 hours, it takes place on a path with some climb or descent challenging but surmountable without the support of mountaineering equipment. The terrain may be bumpy or lack signals.
CHALLENGING: These are itineraries that require long experience, training and physical strength on the part of those who travel them. It is necessary to know how to move with skill even in dangerous terrain: screes, steep slopes or steep stretches, dense scrub, high and without references, rock passages, absence of springs. The difficulty of the terrain and the distance from the support points require total autonomy. Where indicated there may be the need to bring with you bivouac material such as the tent, bivouac bag, stove, food, requires training, energy and strong motivation.
