BOOK "LOST BATTLES - Montanelli environmentalist removed" by Gian Antonio Stella - Solferino
"The destruction of a landscape is a crime that should be worth the perpetrators of life imprisonment." Indro Montanelli, for decades famous for his political polemics, the outbursts on the defects of the Italians, the elzeviri rich in irony, the razors to this or that man of power, the frankness of the dialogues with the readers, was the best known journalist of the last century. Yet a large part of his work, especially (but not only) in the years when our country was experiencing an extraordinary season of economic euphoria but at the same time of cultural, environmental and landscape degradation, has remained unknown. Or almost. Of course, many still remember the historic battle to save Venice but the silence, the oblivion, the removal on dozens of other battles ("almost all lost" sighed) fought for our heritage and in defense of Article 9 of the Constitution remain amazing. From thebuilding assault to thepoisoning of the waters, from the decimation of trees to the looting of archaeological sites, from the Sardinian coasts to the Dolomites: there is no theme on which he has not raised the alarm. Often ignored. Even by those with whom he could perhaps have dialogued. Offering this country different perspectives. Too bad. To rediscover it today, joining his cry against the devastation of the territory,is Gian Antonio Stella who brings to light formidable texts, buried in the archives but very current. Texts that explain what Italy is today and what it could have been. Or maybe go back to being.
