SHELTER D

The Shelter D is a Paleolithic archaeological site of great importance for the history of Trentino and European object for 20 years of excavations by the MUSE, whose works were completed in 2009. The site, for wealth and good preservation of the finds, made it possible to understand the habits, activities and modes of exploitation of the mountain territory by prehistoric people who lived in the area around 13,000 years ago. The discovery of several painted in red ochre stones with various depictions, permits new interpretations on art and spirituality of the ancient hunter-gatherers -Alpine Highlands.

During excavation, one of the most striking findings was the identification of a structure, probably a homebuilding – a circular hut that was presented as a mild depression, with a diameter of about 4 metres, surrounded by a cordon of stones. Within the area identified faunal remains of deer and ibex, Flint implements (scratchers and chisels) and red ochre dust; outside three rituals with Ibex horns.
