HISTORICAL EXCURSION-Special GREAT WAR In the SAME PLACES 100 YEARS LATER
On 29 October 1917 The Austro-Hungarian Army Chief of staff Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf issued directives for a general attack on the Asiago plateau deciding the start of operations on 10 November.
Since 3 November 1917, after the "Route of Caporetto" and because of the failure of the northern part of our lines on the Tagliamento River and the passage of austro-German troops, the Italian high command ordered the withdrawal on the Piave and the Grappa. The 4th Army deployed in Cadore receives the order to retreat from before backward on the defensive line, yellow line, then on the right bank of the Piave, mount Grappa and Val Brenta.
At the same time, also the troops on theAsiago plateau iniziano the retreat from the front lines. The connection between the two armies remains established on the banks of the Sasso Rosso at Foza and along the Brenta Valley. Also because of the order to retreat from our "front line" Austrian troops advancing rapidly toward the central part of the Plateau. On 9 November 10 in Austrian hand falls Asiago touches to Gallium. Fast jump all Italian strongholds. To the East it comes back to fight on defenses in 1916 during the Strafexpedition. Starts the 2nd battle of Melette, but this time the irrepressible Italian stubbornness will not suffice to resist the impetuous Austro-Hungarian, fueled even more by the recent "victory" on the Isonzo River.
