From February 16 to April 13, 2020, the Asiago Prisons Museum will host the ABDALLAH KHALED exhibition. The secret image.
In the evocative space of the Museum Le Prisons, about forty works, oils, acrylics and mixed techniques, trace the incessant research, from the 90s until today, of the Algerian painter, which fuses the intense chromatic accents and abstract forms of the Western avant-garde with the iconographic Arab-African heritage.
The exhibition of the Algerian Master, wanted by the Municipality of Asiago, aims to be a recognition of the work of an artist much appreciated abroad and yet still little known in our country. The paintings presented in this anthology are also a tangible sign of the firm will on the part of the Municipality of Asiago to spread the culture in the local area and beyond; indeed this exhibition wants to clearly demonstrate the concrete commitment of the City to make Asiago and its Plateau, already established destination of international tourism, also an important center of culture andart.
Abdallah Khaled has preserved the Berber culture and speech of Little Kabylia, the region in northern Algeria where he was born in 1954, but to that culture and those memories he has superimposed those of Italy, where he lives since 1981, having followed the courses of the Academy of Fine Artsin Venice,a pupil of Emilio Vedova.
Growing artistically between Italy and Algeria, Khaled has honed his cultural and artistic background through travel and study periods throughout Europe. He has established himself exhibiting in Italian galleries and museums, but also in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Canada, the United States, Japan, Norway, Finland,as well as in Italy, while his works, thanks to his inexhaustible desire to travel and visit different countries, gradually were enriched with new experiences and knowledge.
In his painting, therefore, the formal researches of the mostvanzad Western artistic trendsare found, together with the strong and varied expressive values of his places of origin, rediscovered and deepened during repeated visits.
The sense of his painting is also confirmed in the technique,in theuse of colors,in dense and highly atmospheric oil, but also acrylic, lively and saturated, and mixed technique with elements of collage and small material assemblies.
Not ostentatious, but just let yourself be recognized under the sumptuous apparatus of the colors, lights and matter of which its invented setsare made, then graffiti and engravings of Saharan archaeology, symbols of ancestral life, memories of mountains, oases and desert plains appear.
it is thus, then, that in the paintings you discover narratives of hunting and dancing, scenarios of huts and fortresses, animals, utensils and weapons; Khaled's paintings are the scene of fairy tales never before told, that fascinate the eyes and enchant the soul.
Biographical notes
Abdallah Khaled was born in 1954 in Tamrichte Bejaa,in the Little Kabyliaregion of northernAlgeria. At the age of 14 he moved to Bordj-El-Kiffan, on the outskirts of Algiers, where he attended a private art school and in 1976 he entered the National School of Fine Arts where he was followed by the master of painting Choukri Masly.
In 1980 he obtained a five-year scholarship for abroad that took him, by his choice, to Italy, to Perugia, where he attended theUniversity for Foreigners.
In 1981 he entered theAcademy of Fine Arts in Venice, where he studied painting with the master Emilio Vedova, graduating in 1985, and later took the courses in sculpture. In 1986-88 he attended Giancarlo Scapin's workshop to learn ceramicstechniques.
His work fuses the intense chromatic ignitions and abstract forms of the Western avant-garde with the iconographic Legacy of Arab-Africanor. For Khaled, however, it is essential that his works go beyond the representation of the image, because the work of art cannot and must not be indifferent to life or simply decorative, but must be able to entertain a constant creative and cultural dialogue through poetics.
There are numerous group and personal exhibitions in which he participated, gaining a wide consensus of public and criticism. His paintings can be found at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers and in many private collections in Canada, the United States, Japan, Norway, Finland, as well as in Italy.
He lives and works in Schio, in the province of Vicenza.
The reopening of the exhibition
Statement by the Delegate Of The City of Asiago Culture
The Prisons Museum reopens its doors to the public starting saturday, June 27,taking concrete and metaphorically, thanks to the works of the Algerian artist Abdallah Khaled, that dialogue with a distant world, which has been interrupted and has been foreclosed to us because of the experience that, touching deep in our lives, has forced us, in these months of health emergency,to reduce relations with the outside world, with all that is So let's pick up where we left off, even taking back the spaces of culture and art, able to mend relationships and rebuild trust for the future. My deep thanks go to this extraordinary Artist, at the Nino Sindoni Art Gallery, for allowing us to extend this exhibition characterized by a painting that digs the material, or perhaps the soul, evoking that performative power of the word and images that was implied from the first artistic manifestations of man: that power, believed by the ancients, such that naming, painting something meant at the same time making it real, hic et nunc, as in a kind of secret magic formula that allowed to make concrete the invisible and the hidden. The soul and the memories of the artist go to winter, to become matter, to engrave those memories and thoughts that, after all, in a universal process, common to all of us, mark us to the point of secretly, but inexorably, forming our being.
