"A YEAR ON THE PLATEAU" - EMILIO LUSSU

Lussu was born in Armungia, a small town in the province of Cagliari, on December 4, 1890.
During his university studies, Lussu in favor of Italy's entry into the war against Austria and Germany, led him to side with the Democratic interventionists (Republicans, Salveminians). After graduating from law school in 1914, he volunteeredas a complement officer in the Sassari Brigade, consisting mainly of Sardinian shepherds and peasants. In 1916, his Brigade in the middle of the Strafexpedition is sent to the mountains around Asiago to stem the spread of the Austrians towards the Vicentine plain. Heroic defense in the area of the Melettes of Foza (Monte Fior, Monte Castelgomberto) earned the gold medal to the flag.

The life of trenches in the mountains of Alpia, and the tragic experience inspires and prompts Lussu to write the book"A Year on the Plateau". The work first appeared in 1938 in France and only in 1945 in Italy, published by the publisher Einaudi.

In addition to Lusù, during our itinerary we will meet excerpts from Paolo Monelli's "Shoes to the Sun" from " SardinianFanterie in the shadow of the Tricolore" by Alfredo Graziani, from the diary of Giuseppe Tommasi in "Sassari Brigade – war notes" and from " The IntrepidSardinians of the Sassari Brigade" written by Leonardo Motzo who wrote his work in 1930 not only based on his memories lived first-hand, but enriching it with historical documents of the Brigade, thus not stopping only at a memorial work but writing an account that could witness over time the exploits and sacrifices of the First World.
