10th edition of the Alpine Multilingual Literature Prize named after Mario Rigoni Stern

Coinciding with the twelfth anniversary (tomorrow, 16 June) of the death of the Asian writer Mario Rigoni Stern, the Committee promoting the Prize for Multilingual Literature of the Alps, dedicated to him, has determined that the tenth edition will take place on the evening of 17 September at the Riva del Garda Fair, in spaces that will allow the distance between those present.

The books entered in the literary competition are 61,the highest number ever, about ten of them in German, Slovenian and Occitan. The winner will be chosen by the jury composed of Ilvo Diamanti, Marco Albino Ferrari, Paola Filippi, Mario Isnenghi and Daniele Jalla.

During the final will also be awarded the Guardian of the Ark-Osvaldo Dongilli Award to a person or association that has distinguished itself in the protection and enhancement of the mountain.

This year's edition is in fact the prologue to the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of the Highland writer, which will take place in 2021 and for which the Municipality of Asiago and the National Committee is preparing a dense calendar of initiatives. Among these will be the enhancement of the great archive of the writer, which the family intends to donate to the Municipality of Asiago, as soon as the spaces intended for it in the Civic Library in the Millepini Theatre complex are put into operation.

A part of the final evening of the Prize will therefore be dedicated to the account of the archivist Ilaria Zacchilli on the findings that emerged during the analytical census carried out in recent months on the countless falcons and objects bequeathed by the Asian writer, and currently still housed in his house in Val Giardini. Among his objects used during the war (the military cassette, his spoon, a belt that reveals the hardships to which he was subjected during his captivity) are resurfaced notes, photographs, his agendas, the dense correspondence with other writers and with his historical publisher,Einaudi, and even some unpublished, such as some juvenile writings and the preface to an edition of "Quota Albania", one of the books that Rigoni loved. A selection of these documents and memorabilia will be displayed in the spaces that will host the final of the Prize.

The Rigoni Stern Prize, which takes place alternately in Trentino and Veneto, was born in 2011 to promote the development of cultures that refer to the Alpine arc, and is intended for works of fiction and nonfiction that enhance its landscape, traditions, productive activities in the name of eco-compatibility, the sociocultural context of the different communities that inhabit it, with their historical institutions related to the community use of goods, hunting, as an activity linked to a particular environmental sensitivity, the war in the mountains as a particular and painful scenario of European history, the narrative heritage, with its fairy tales, legends, its myths of yesterday and today, its vocation to be a hinge between north and south, between Mediterranean and Mediterranean area. Established with the intention of honoring the memory of Mario Rigoni Stern, the Prize aims to perpetuate its values of brotherhood among peoples, respect for the environment, tolerance and solidarity.

The Prize is currently supported by the municipalities of Asiago and Riva del Garda, the Veneto Region - Regional Council and the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Itas Insurance Group, the Rigoni of Asiago, the Federcaccia, the Riva del Garda FairsCongress, the Ars Venandi Circle and the Museum of the Customs and Customs of the Trentino people.
