The Campolongo Fort on the Asiago Plateau Seven Municipalities - Video by Andrea Monea

This video, shot by our friend Andrea Monea at the end of August 2021, accompanies us to Forte Campolongo offering us a spectacular aerial view of the imposing structure of the fortification and its domes. Looking at it you are struck by the impressive views of the Val d'Astico and Val D'Assbelow and by the mountain panorama of which the 360-degree view allows us.

Fort Campolongo was built, between 1908 and 1912, to defend the Italian border against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, constituting with the Corbin and Verena Forts the most direct Italian response to the Austrian forts.

It stands at 1,720 meters above sea level on the top of the homonymous mountain that rises on the western edge of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni,on the right side of the middle Val d'Astico in the municipal territory of Rotzo. The building, which overlooks the underlying Val d'Assa with sheer walls, in 2010/2011 was the subject of restoration thanks to the project of the Great War Ecomuseum of the Vicentine Prealps, which made it easily visitable, enriching it also with a wide range of informative / educational panels.

The fort, with its 4 149 mm steel cannons, placed in rotating domes 160 mm thick, represented one of the most modern achievements of the Italian Military Engineers.

In July 1915 it was severely damaged by the Austro-Hungarian Škoda 305 mm mortar stationed at Cost'Alta (Millegrobbe) and almost completely destroyed during the Strafexpedition (Spring Offensive) on 15 May 1916 by the shells of a 381 mm Skoda mortar (named "Barbara"). On May 22, 1916, abandoned by the Italian army, it was occupied by the enemy who then held it firmly until the end of the conflict.

The fort can be reached starting from the Campolongo Refuge or from the Spiazzo Garibaldi (path n. 810), both places located on the road that leads to Monte Verena.

Theitinerary that leads to Forte Campolongo is undemanding and also suitable for those who are not particularly trained. You can find it HERE.
