Mario Rigoni Stern, born in Asiago on 1 November 1921, besides being one of the greatest writers and storytellers of postwar Italian is also one of the few who survived the retreat of Russia in shipping Alpina on the icy shores of Don, in 1943, during World War II.

On the thread of memory, Rigoni Stern reported on paper all the episodes, and not autobiographical, recounting life experiences of writer plateau, set almost in its entirety to his homeland, "the plateau" – as He loved to call it in honor of Emilio Lussu –, who sings all his love and simplicity.

Rigoni Stern, with its deep dialect and never dull, simple and at the same time fascinating, has managed to unite a nation, indeed the world. "We're all neighbors" – he repeated. Preached purity, simplicity, respect for nature. Even as a young man when, less than 50 meters from the Russian enemy across the River Don, its land seemed so far away.

Mario is the third child of eight children, born and raised in a family that traded wool and timber in theAsiago plateau, between the Alpine pastures, forests and mountain people just got out from the ruins of the great war. After completing his studies at the age of 17 years he enlisted as a volunteer in the military school of Mountaineering of Aosta, when the Second World War was still a long way off.

No time to breathe the clear air of his mountain in ' 39 was recalled to the Department: at that moment, life of Rigoni Stern was handed over to the pages of a book called War.

Engaged first in the Albanian front (experience told in the book "Albania Share") and then into that Russian, experience the tragedy of retreat, ofabandonment and death in the freezing cold snow, and then the deportation camp until 1945, when he fled back into his Asiago.

I still have my nose the smell that made the fat on piping submachine gun. I still have in my ears the cric-croc of snow under boots, and sneezing, coughing Russian watch men on the other side of the River, and the reeds, the dried herb that way you move making noise. In the eye when I think about the square of Cassiopeia overhead every night, and the square wooden tole den over the head, every day ... and if I think about it well in the blood I have the thrill of that morning that hurled us all together on his 72 Super b ombarde.

THE MAIN WORKS

The last prison, Mario Rigoni Stern began writing what will prove to be his most successful work, "the Sergeant in the snow". A story written on sheets that rolled up and tied with string, keeping them jealously and then offer them to read to his friend Giovanni Paganin. From there, bright career began as a writer offormer soldier Plateau. Elio Vittorini, direct contributor to Einaudi, noticed right away the great qualities, and in 1953 published his book arousing great print and critical approval and becoming a source ofpride of the plateau people .

In 1962 Stern shows her talent with "Il bosco degli Grouses," a hymn to love for his land, how much more personal lives in his works.

"The Don" (1973), personal emotions and historical reenactments told after a journey of remembrance on the banks of the river that had inspired him; "History of Tonle" (1978), portrait of a shepherd that intersects with the great history; "The year of victory" (1985) and "Le stagioni di Giacomo(1995), the story of the return to life of a community; are works not less important who devote Mario Rigoni Stern as one of the most atypical Italian writers.

Rigoni Stern subsequently collaborated with the newspaper "La Stampa", for which he wrote short stories as well as engage in historical studies, including the recent book "1915/18. The war in the Highlands. Between two wars and other stories".

In 1998 he was awarded by the University of Padova the honorary degree in forestry.

Recently participated in the tv programme "Che tempo Che fa" conducted by Fabio Fazio, which gives an interview of great human depth. Moving is also the first vibrant broadcast of "Sergeant", play by Marco Paolini, transmitted by Abdullah of Zovencedo (VI) in the presence of Rigoni Stern and his friend and fellow battles Lieutenant Nelson Cenci.

On 16 June 2008, after a long illness, Mario Rigoni Stern dies at home to Asiago.

As he requested, the news of his death was made public only the day after the celebration of his funeral.

It would be nice one day, reading my story he wrote Mario Rigoni Stern in Il Sergente nella neve – someone could locate the place and try my own feelings and my own feelings.
