BOOK "PACHYDERMIS AND PARROTS"
The Italian public debate is often influenced by clichés about the economy that find no basis in reality. There's all kinds of them. There are the hoaxes about Europe, which are very popular at this time, so the euro is nothing more than a plot by obscure northern European powers to starve the Mediterranean countries. There are those on the banks, which do not lend money because if they want to keep them (to do us what then you do not know) and that we had to save with 60 billion public money. There are the hoaxes about technocrats, incapable and, perhaps, corrupt, who have made us enter the euro at a wrong exchange rate (which has doubled prices) and who have decided, on their own initiative, to prevent the financing of the public deficit by printing money (hence the ruin of Italian public accounts). There are those on pensions, according to which the problems of sustainability of the Italian pension system do not arise from demographic forces (ageing population, collapse of births), but from the wickedness of some ministers of austerity governments. And so on.
Often in hoaxes there are elements of truth. But it is important, if we want to understand the economy of our country and the world, to be able to distinguish these elements of truth from the exaggerations that are artfully created by a pounding propaganda on social media and, increasingly, on traditional media, to direct public opinion according to well-defined strategies. This is what Carlo Cottarelli does by analyzing the prejudices and fake news that pollute the Italian debate, to separate what is true from propaganda and to free us from the poisonous swarm of misconceptions that has spread in the years of "populist" Italy. Not forgetting that there are more traditional hoaxes, those of the establishment, which are also misleading. The book closes with a chapter on "misinformation techniques" because, if you understand how buffaloes are prepared, it becomes easier not to get caught by the nose.
