On Sunday 29 September 2024, in Roana in Piazza S. Giustina, starting at 10.00 a.m., the celebrations for the centenary of the inauguration of the Roana bridge will be held, a work that not only represents a fundamental infrastructure for the viability of the Plateau, but which also stands as a symbol of union between the hamlets of the Municipality.
The event, jointly organized by the Alpine Group of Roana, the Municipality of Roana and the Parish of Roana, will offer participants an immersion in the history and culture of the area.
After the Holy Mass, the morning will continue with an exciting reading by Moreno Corà, accompanied by the music of Pierangelo Tamiozzo, who will retrace the events that have marked the life of the bridge.
At 11.00 a.m. the Municipal Council of Roana will meet in an extraordinary session and then the Council of the Mountain Union "Dear Regency of the Seven Municipalities".
The celebrations will be embellished by the presence of the Monte Lèmerle Music Band of Cesuna, which will accompany the highlights of the day.
During the day it will also be possible to visit the photographic exhibition on the history of the bridge at the Cimbrian Institute of Culture, and finally, from 10.00 to 15.00, at the office of the Pro Loco of Roana, it will be possible to have the special postmark dedicated to the anniversary.
THE HISTORY OF THE ROANA BRIDGE
The construction of the Roana Bridge has its roots in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the need for a large viaduct that would connect the two banks of the Valdassa, facilitating connections between the hamlets of the municipality of Roana, began to be discussed
Among the events that preceded the construction of the first bridge, it is certainly worth mentioning the "tumult of Cimbrian women" who, led by the charismatic "Togna Turca", made their voices heard loudly in the politics of the time, asking for the auction for the construction of the bridge to be announced.
The bridge was designed by the engineer Aurelio Slaviero di Asiago, and the first viaduct was inaugurated in 1906, representing a technological and social achievement. However, the bridge was blown up in 1916 during the First World War, to hinder the advance of Austro-Hungarian troops, a painful but necessary sacrifice to protect the territory.
It was rebuilt in reinforced concrete with three arches after the war, and on September 24, 1924, the new bridge was officially inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Benito Mussolini. This ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the community of Roana, with the bridge becoming not only a vital infrastructure for the viability of the plateau, but also a symbol of rebirth and resilience, capable of physically and symbolically connecting the different hamlets of the municipality.
Even today, as then, the bridge is a powerful symbol of union for the community and an important infrastructure for the local road network.
