Photo by Daniele CalgaroOn Saturday 16 August 2025, the Pro Loco of Treschè Conca di Roana invites history and nature enthusiasts to participate in a fascinating historical excursion on Mount Ortigara, one of the most significant places on the Asiago Plateau as regards the memory of the First World War.
Ortigara was in fact the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Great War, fought between 10 and 29 June 1917. In those days, the Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops clashed bitterly for control of the summit. Despite their numerical superiority and the use of heavy artillery, the Italian forces suffered heavy losses and were eventually forced to retreat after temporarily conquering the summit.
During the excursion it will be possible to visit some of the symbolic places of war memory: the remains of the trenches, the Lozze Church with its ossuary, the Italian memorial stone – known as the "Severed Column", engraved with the touching inscription "Not to forget" – and the Austrian memorial stone, silent testimonies of the past.
It will be an opportunity to reflect on the tragic events of the war and a tribute to the fallen.
The itinerary winds along the CAI path n° 840, starting from Piazzale Lozze. The route crosses a mountain environment of extraordinary beauty, among coniferous forests, karst sinkholes and spectacular panoramic views of the Plateau of the 7 Municipalities, offering an experience that combines historical interest with naturalistic wonder.
