Photo by Daniele CalgaroOn Friday, July 19 , 2024, history and nature enthusiasts will be able to take part in a fascinating historical excursion to Mount Ortigara, a place of great importance for the war events of the First World War.
In fact, it was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Great War, which took place from 10 to 29 June 1917, a period during which Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops clashed violently for control of the summit. Despite their numerical superiority and heavy artillery, the Italians suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat after temporarily capturing the top of the mountain.
The excursion will allow you to visit the remains of the trenches, the Lozze Church with the Ossuary, the Italian Memorial Stone, known as the "Severed Column" where the famous inscription "not to forget" is engraved, but also the Austrian Memorial Stone.
offering an opportunity to reflect on the tragic events of the war and a tribute to the fallen.
The itinerary, which starts from Piazzale Lozze, develops along the path n° 840 of the CAI and crosses a unique landscape, characterized by coniferous forests, karst sinkholes and panoramic views of the Asiago Plateau.
The meeting is set for 07:00 at Piazzale Baita Azzurra in Treschè Conca, starting at 07:30.
The excursion, of medium difficulty, provides for the return in the mid-afternoon.
