FEATURES OF THE TRAIL

This fascinating route runs along the ancient mule of the Piovega di Sotto,an ancient flint route that connects the center of Enego with the valley floor, until you reach the banks of the BrentaRiver, near the village of Cismon del Grappa.

This mule was once, together with the nearby Piovega di Sopra, the only way of communication with the valley below: the term Piovega derives most likely from the Latin Public, which was used to indicate a route not private but open to all.

Similar to the nearby and well-known Calà del Sasso, the mule track of the Piovega di Sotto is an authentic work of engineering that counted, in its main branch as many as 5680 stone steps, many of which are still clearly visible today.
Its shape with narrow hairpin bends made it suitable for the transit of small timber, various goods - such as lime and coal - and animals. For the transport of the longer and larger trunks, on the other hand, the Piovega di Soprawas used, which had a more straight path.

With a serpentine at a constant slope, the ancient street of the Piovega di Sotto, starting from Enego, arrived and still reaches the valley floor, near the old tavern (now Pizzeria Birreria Cornale).
The main route (791) from the centre of Enego leads to the Brenta valley through the districts of Fosse; However, there is also a detour (791b) that, starting from the center of the village, leads first to the village of Valdifabbro and then to cross Velte resorts and the Bartaise hill,to finally rejoin the main branch about two hundred meters before the entrance to Fosse di Sotto.
In this itinerary, we will follow the detour on the way back and then go back to the main road in the return.

In addition to the landscapes and nature that surrounds you, along the way you will also be fascinated by the many capitals that dot the path, ancient testimonies of faith and folk traditions.

HOW TO GET TO THE STARTING POINT

Theroute of the Piovega Trail below has as its starting and finishing point the center of Enego, onthe Plateau of the Seven Municipalities.

To reach the country from Asiago, you will proceed in the direction of Gaul, along Provincial Road 76. We will then continue towards Foza and from here we will always continue along the SP76,following the directions to Enego.
The road will soon lead to the centre of the village, passing through the famous Valgàdena Bridge, one of the highest viaducts in Italy and Europe.

Those arriving from Valsugana will be able to reach Enego by taking the SP76 Valgadena to thePrimolano-Asiago-Enego exit and then following the directions to Enego.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RAIN ROUTE BELOW

The departure of the Piovega route below is from the center of Enego, precisely from St. Mark's Square.
With the Cathedral of Santa Giustina behind and the Scaligera Tower on the left, proceed south, taking Via Beato Murialdo and then quickly descending to the first houses of Via Valdifabbro.

As per signage, at the crossroads follow the left road and, shortly after, take the mule track (CAI 791b) that rises to the Col Bartàise. At the top of the hill, a beautiful panorama will open in front of you, giving you a magnificent view that stretches all the way to the St. Martin's Stakes, the Feltrine Peaks, the Bellunesi Dolomites, the Valbelluna and the Grappa Massif.

After enjoying this magnificent view, continue along the mule track, which downhill will take you to the Vélte (from the véltcimbro,"country"),flat area with wide sun-kissed meadows, once used for cereal crops. On the left, you can see a lovely glimpse with the Cathedral of Santa Giustina popping up in the distance, framed by the mountains.

Itinerario per escursioni e famiglie a Enego

So cross the Vélte and continue to follow the mule track, always downhill, until you meet the main branch of the Piovega di Sotto ( CAI791). At the crossroads, keep the right, passing immediately in front of the capital dedicated to St. Anthony and continuing the descent to the valley floor.

The route is now really impressive: in this stretch the steps made of stones that make up the Piovega have preserved very well and you can admire them, step by step, as you descend. Who knows how many people and animals have passed over these stones over the centuries, one wonders!

Along the way, you will also meet several capitals, places that testify to the great faith of the ancient inhabitants of Enego and the valley.
First you will pass in front of the so-called "Capital of the Meneghini", beautiful 17th-century construction with a "mora" Madonnaat the center; after bypassing the imposing rocky structures on the Brenta canyon, on a hairpin bend you will see a large wooden cross overlooking the underlying cismon conca; further on, you will find another capital, dating back to 1728; Finally, the capital dedicated to Our Lady of Pedancino will welcome you on arrival, near the Pizzeria Birreria Cornale.

To return, retrace the mule on the way, this time uphill. As far as you arrive at the crossroads of the capital of St. Anthony, continue this time along the main path (CAI 791),on the right, towards the contrada of Fosse di Sotto.
The Piovega di Sotto will take you back, crossing the districts of Fosse di Sotto, Middle Pits and Pits of Above,in the center of Enego,at the foot of the Cathedral.
