HOW TO GET TO THE STARTING POINT
The road of the old train is a classic itinerary for those who want to start discovering the Plateau by Mountain Bike (MTB) without too much effort, ideal for those who are at the first rides.
Suitable for families and children, it winds largely immersed in the woods always with a fairly straight and slightly sloping course.
The starting point is the Asiago Ice Stadium, a strategic point where you can reach by car and park without problems. Starting from the parking lot you pass behind the old station and you start to take the train road passing near the camper area located at the entrance of the village.
The route initially takes place on a sort of embankment passing through the Consortium of Dairies and then continuing in the direction of Canove. In this first part of the itinerary alternate sections in trenches and open stretches where the gaze can range and admire the beauty of the Plateau and many of its countries.
ITINERARY DESCRIPTION
The "vaca mora"
During the summer season the green of the meadows and woods predominates , while in autumn the green mixes with the autumn colors creating a truly suggestive landscape. Along the path, near Canove, for those who want to make a stop, you can visit the Museum of the Great War, where over 5000 documents and finds are preserved that testify how those distant and difficult years were lived on the Plateau, which was undoubtedly one of the main theaters of the First World War.
Outside the Museum there is a locomotive very similar to the "Vaca Mora" that is the cogwheel train that, until 1955, traveled the route from the plain to Asiago.
From Canove the road continues downhill and it is recommended to pay attention to the intersection with the roads leading to the residential areas as they are open to motorized traffic.
After the descent, the Mountain Bike (MTB) path begins to climb gently and enters the woods, where different types of trees rise luxuriantly: from spruce, to Scots pine, to white fir.
Also in this section the path is partly in trenches with walls covered with grass and spontaneous vegetation, and partly immersed in the woods.
Asphalt section
This part of the itinerary is particularly pleasant riding the Mountain Bike because the slope is never excessive allowing you to make the right effort and enjoy the surrounding environment.
Approaching Cesuna there is an old railway exit and after about 1.5km you get to meet the asphalt, a sign that you have arrived near the village.
Along this stretch of asphalt, you pass under a bridge with a concrete arch and, after a few hundred meters, you reach a small children's playground with a fountain on the left. Further on, in front of us, we will find the square of the former Cesuna Station.
Here you can leave the path of the train and, without entering the square, turn left taking the paved road that goes up.
After about 80 meters keep left again taking Via Larici.
Via Larici continues for about 500 meters paved and then turns into dirt road. Be careful not to get confused with a dirt road that climbs to the right that still turns out to be quite bumpy and steep.
Dirt section
Continuing along the dirt road, after about 3 km, you reach an intersection called by the locals "the 5 roads" because 5 roads intersect.
In this intersection is the Baito Boscon which can become a place for shelter in case of sudden storms. Also in this area you can lay the Mountain Bike and make a small stop. From the intersection you take the road that goes down, (be careful to face the descent with caution because the ground is a bit rough). Along this short descent it is possible to stop to see one of the differentmilitary cemeteries that are located in the area of the Plateau, testimony that in these places soldiers of different nationalities have died as well as our Italians.
From the Boscon cemetery continue for another 500 meters until you cross a small steep ramp on the left, which rejoins the road altimetrically higher than 4-5 meters. Then take the ramp to enter the main road of the outward journey.
From this point, to complete the tour, follow the road traveled on the way until you get back to Asiago.
