Mountain Bike Itinerary (MTB) Strada del Vecchio Trenino - Asiago Plateau

Simple Mountain Bike (MTB)  itinerary partly on asphalt and partly on light dirt road that allows you to start getting to know the plateau and its beauties, its unspoiled nature and lush woods, as well as see some places  that testify to the events of the First World War, all along the ancient route of the train that until 1955 transported people from the plain to the plateau.

ITINERARY (MTB): Strada del Trenino

Technical information
Length: 20 km
Difference in altitude: 250 mt
Maximum altitude: 1100 mt
Difficulty: EASY
Walking time: 2 hours 30

HOW TO GET TO THE STARTING POINT

The road of the old train is a classic cycle-pedestrian itinerary for those who want to start discovering the Plateau by Mountain Bike (MTB) without too much effort, ideal for those who are just starting out.
Suitable for families and children, it winds largely immersed in the woods always with a fairly straight and not very steep course.

The starting point is the Asiago Ice Stadium, a strategic point where you can reach by car and park without problems. Starting from the parking lot, you pass behind the old station and begin to travel along the train road passing near the parking lot located at the entrance to the town.

The route initially takes place on a sort of embankment passing through the Consortium of Dairies and then continuing in the direction of Canove. In this first part of the itinerary, stretches in trenches alternate with open sections where the gaze can wander and admire the beauty of the Plateau and many of its villages.

ITINERARY DESCRIPTION

Itinerario Strada del Trenino Asiago - La Vaca Mora

The "vaca mora"

During the summer season , the green of the meadows and woods predominates, while in autumn the green mixes with the autumn colors creating a truly evocative landscape. Along the path, near Canove, for those wishing to take a break, it is possible to visit the Museum of the Great War, where over 5000 documents and artifacts are  preserved that testify how those distant and difficult years were lived on the plateau, which was undoubtedly one of the main theaters of the First World War.

Outside the Museum there is a locomotive very similar to the "Vaca Mora" that is the cogwheel train that, until 1955, traveled the route from the plain to Asiago.
From Canove the road continues downhill and it is recommended to pay attention to the intersection with the roads leading to the  residential areas as they are open to motorized traffic.
At the end of the descent, the Mountain Bike (MTB) path begins to climb gently and enters the woods, where different types of trees rise luxuriantly: from spruce, to Scots pine, to silver fir.
Also in this section the route is partly in a trench with walls covered with grass and spontaneous vegetation, and partly immersed in the woods.

Itinerario Strada del Trenino Asiago - Tratto asfaltato

Asphalt section

This stretch of the itinerary is particularly pleasant on the mountain bike because the slope is never excessive, allowing you to make the right effort and enjoy the surrounding environment.

Approaching Cesuna there is an old railway toll booth and after about 1.5km you come to meet the asphalt, a sign that you have reached the vicinity of the village.

Walking along this stretch of asphalt, you pass under a bridge with a concrete arch and, after a few hundred meters, you reach a small children's playground with a fountain on the left. Further on, in front of us, we will find the square of the former Cesuna Station.
Here you can leave the train route and, without entering the square, turn left taking the paved road that climbs.
After about 80 meters , keep left again, taking Via Larici.
Via Larici continues for about 500 meters paved and then turns into a dirt road. Be careful not to get confused with a dirt road that climbs to the right which is still quite bumpy and steep.

Itinerario Strada del Trenino Asiago - Tratto sterrato

Dirt section

Continuing along the dirt road, after about 3 km, you reach a crossroads called by the locals "the 5 roads" because 5 roads intersect.
At this intersection is the Baito Boscon which can become a place for shelter in case of sudden storms. Also in this area you can put down your mountain bike and take a small break. From the crossroads take the road that descends, (be careful to approach the descent with caution because the terrain is a bit uneven). Along this short descent it is possible to stop and see one ofthe various military cemeteries that are located in the area of the plateau, evidence that soldiers of different nationalities as well as our Italians died in these places.
From the Boscon cemetery , continue for another 500 meters until you cross a small steep ramp on the left, which rejoins the road with an altitude of 4-5 meters. Then take the ramp to get onto the main road of the outward journey.
From this point, to complete the tour, follow the road taken on the outward journey until you reach Asiago again.
