The exclusion of Asiago's candidacy for the Olympic event in Cortina d'Ampezzo has sparked strong controversy

PRESS RELEASE of the MUNICIPALITY of ASIAGO of 5 JULY 2018

THE MAYOR'S RESPONSE TO ASIAGO TO REGION

Statement by the Mayor of Asiago, Roberto Rigoni Stern, concerning statements made by Luca Zaia in response to the note of disapproval for theexclusion of the candidacy of Asiago to the Olympic event in Cortina d'Ampezzo:

"Following the complaints set out in previous statement released by Comune di Asiago, I believe the excuses given in the Veneto region's inadequate and embarrassing press release where, in order to motivate the choice of Fiemme – instead of Asiago – Nordic world ski racing to allocate claims that are due to "technical reasons" related "to the need to have the same place trampoline and ski slopes for Nordic combined".
There are technical reasons of any kind that would justify such an exclusion and non-commitment to our city if we consider that the choice to distinguish where competitions are held from the Fund than the combined Nordica, which requires the trampoline, were often taken in the past, without any increase in cost and are also object of the candidacy of Milan where the Nordic combined and the jump are programmed in Sankt Moritz while Nordic skiing in Valtellina.
It remains a bad taste in my mouth for commitments not kept and by the fact that our region support a nomination that highlights the rich towns of Trentino – that such unfair competition does to our mountains – not the excellence of their land
".

Below the first note of disapproval sent by the Mayor of Asiago and the response of the Veneto region.

THE FIRST NOTE OF MAYOR ROBERTO RIGONI STERN:

"We are surprised at this news contained in the dossier on the candidacy at 2026 Winter Olympics of Cortina presented today by President Zaia in Rome. If so, should it really be true that Asiago and the plateau does not include it, if not marginally, the overall organization of the Olympic event, it would be a very grave error setting. I have great respect for President Zaia can think that, despite the public promises and commitments from the same hires, even with me personally, to consider Asiago which location to allocate Nordic ski racing, decided to choose them la Trentina Val di Fiemme.
It seems to me that this approach is contrary to the logic of ensuring the Veneto the right visibility for a world event that you want to organize just as a reminder of the excellence in tourism winter of our region. And that is precisely its Governor to exclude the area which made skiing its excellence worldwide with over 400 kilometres of slopes that attract industry experts and skiers from all over the world, I find it an aberration.
That's why I want to think of this as a clerical error, otherwise we would be facing a grave offense against a major winter tourist vocation zone of our nation that would make weak this nomination since it first
evaluation "

THE RESPONSE OF THE REGION:

In relation to a statement from the Mayor of Asiago relatively to the localization of certain race scenarios envisaged in the dossier for candidacy of Cortina to 2026 Winter Olympics venue, regional technical sources point out the following:

"The reasons than complained to the Mayor of Asiago are attributable to the need to have the same place trampoline and ski slopes for Nordic combined where possible.
In the Master Plan of Turin and Milan, the facility is located within the springboard respectively in Pragelato and St. Moritz. Added to this is the distance between Cortina and Asiago equal to 160 km (2:00 and 46) against 89 km between Cortina and Predazzo (1:00 53).
On this doesn't want to build new plants without a clear management skills. Works like the trampoline are particularly difficult to manage, given the low number of practitioners. Would then have a huge impact on the local community, especially having to Predazzo in the immediate vicinity.
Suffice it to say that even the Olympic ski jump in Pragelato has long been unused and imagines the dismantling even after 2026 if Turin was chosen.
Asiago is still valued as a training site for Nordic skiing and ice disciplines. The only springboard present at gallium, small trampoline (k95) would need to be retrained because used only in summer. Missing the large hill (k120) that would be built from scratch at a cost of 35/40 million
