Appeal from the Asiago Plateau: we open the ski slopes safely, save the mountain

The closure of the ski slopes over the Christmas period would compromise the tourism sector and the related

In recent days the ski theme has been at the center of national discussions, has filled talk shows with numerous television broadcasts and appeared on the front pages of local and national newspapers.

The Covid-19 emergency and the high number of infections and deaths certainly make us reflect and force maximum cautions, but the mountain cannot die.

The debate is, although rampant, rather limited. At the heart of the debate is the opening or not of the ski lifts duringthe Christmas holidays, but in reality it is not a question of simply commissioning ski lifts and opening the ski slopes.

What this entails, in fact, has a serious impact on everythingthat is related, onthe entire tourist economy of the mountain sector.

There are territories, like ours, that live largely on tourism, with families entirely dedicated to tourist hospitality and related services: hotels and B&Bs, restaurants, bars, shops, real estate, apartments, snow professionals (ski instructors, mid-mountain guides), amateur sports associations, renters, just to name a few.

An estimated value of between half and a third of the turnover of the sector can be traced back precisely to the Christmas period and already in case of apertra of the slopes (Anef and Skipass Panorama Turismo data) a -30.6% turnover is expected, which, in the event of closure of the plants, could reach even a -65%. A catastrophe.

It should also be considered that all these categories employ their staff, but also other categories, such as electricians, plumbers, maintainers, laundries, distributors of raw materials, etc.

On the Asiago Plateau Seven municipalities we have numerous advantageous factors that allow the practice of skiing in compliance with the protocols approved by the regions. Please note that there are no cable cars or cable cars, but only ski lifts and chairlifts, means of transport completely outdoors.

We have many ski resorts that naturally lead to avoid the concentration of influx of skiers, who spontaneously distribute themselves among them.

The territorialextension of the Plateau, think of the approximately 500 km of cross-country skiing slopes, allows you to stay outdoors and in contact with nature, ensuring the necessary distancing.

To open the slopes safely, therefore, in our opinion, what needs to be done, in addition to following all the precautionary regulations in force in this area, is:

1 – ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH ADEQUATE DISTANCES IN THE INPUT ROWS TO THE PLANTS

2 - LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE who can have simultaneous access to it.

During the summer, economic operators demonstrated that they were able to comply with the current regulations and indications of the various administrations on Covid-19. Hotels, B&Bs, bars, restaurants, shops, are therefore already definitely ready and equipped.

THE CLOSURE OF THE SKI SLOPES DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS WOULD BE A VERY SERIOUS DAMAGE for our Plateau, as well as for the other mountain territories of Italy, damage that probably would not bring a real benefit to the containment of the epidemic.

On the contrary, restrictions on plant openings would precisely cause the undesirable effect of concentrating the population and tourists in the centres of the countries, thus easily causing gatherings or critical situations.

Remember that skiing can be seen as pure fun, but it has a very high pedagogical value from a sporting and educational point of view towards the mountain environment and compliance with the rules. And it's also good for your health.
