The 5th Rgt Alpini in Monte Fior and Castelgomberto

The war flag of the 5th Alpine Regiment is flying over Mount Fior and Mount Castelgomberto for the department's body party.

The 5th Alpine Regiment celebrated its body party yesterday at Monte Fior and Monte Castelgomberto,returning the war flag of the department to those heights of theAsiago Plateau (VI) where, during the World War I, the Alpini battalion "Morbegno" of the 5th Alpine Regiment wrote epic pages of its history.

It was on these heights that, in June 1916, the staunch resistance of the men of the Alpine Battalion "Morbegno" – currently commanded by ten. With. Giulio Monti – allowed the Italian backlines to form a defence capable of arresting the Strafexpedition of the Austro-Hungarian army, an operation that aimed to break through the Italian line to spread in the nearby plain Padana. The Austro-Hungarian army was forced to abandon the idea of maintaining these positions and retreating to more easily defensible positions: in fact, the peaks of Monte Fior and Monte Castelgomberto will mark the maximum advanced of the Austro-Hungarian army on the Asiago Plateau for the duration of the conflict.
The flag of the 5th Alpine Regiment will later be decorated with a silver medal for military valour for the war efforts sustained in this delicate phase of the conflict.

Col. Ruggero CUCCHINI, Commander of the 5th Alpine Regiment wanted to emphasize the importance of this event recalling "Howthe sacrifice of those men is for today's mountaineers, but not only, for all Italian citizens source of inspiration. The spirit of sacrifice, the brotherhood and the Alpine solidarity, the sense of duty, are timeless values that must be constantly referred to. Today we must be grateful to those who have immolated on this battlefield but also to those who have survived. It is these men who have built today's Europe, where the mountaineers of the 5th with the Austrian Alpenjgers have worked side by side to consolidate peace inthe recent mission conducted in Kosovo by the Regiment."

To make the event even more significant, numerous banners of the fighting and weapons associations – including the dissecting banner of theANA of Asiago-Monte Ortigara, Bergamo, Marostica and Bassano del Grappa , as well as a representation of theNational Infantry Association – who have always been committed to defending the historical memory of these war events that have inevitably marked the history of our country, fortifying the sense of unity and laying the foundations of a modern Italy.
