Mayor Roberto Rigoni: "The collaboration with the art critic is also strengthened with future exhibition projects"
ASIAGO, 28 December 2022 - Vittorio Sgarbi returns to the Plateau with a presentation dedicated to Antonio Canova. Wednesday, January 4, 2023, starting at 6.30 pm, at the Millepini Theater in Asiago presents "Canova and the Beloved Beauty", from the homonymous book published for La Nave di Teseo.
"Our cultural collaboration continues with the undersecretary for culture Vittorio Sgarbi - says the mayor of Asiago Robero Rigoni Stern - It is, for us, a great opportunity that aims to increase the image of Asiago within the most important national cultural circuits. After the success of the exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ligabue, we are honored that Vittorio Sgarbi, as president of the most important Italian museum of modern and contemporary art, the Mart in Rovereto, has decided to dedicate an unprecedented exhibition to the Asiaghese sculptor Giovanni Paganin. The international exhibition will be inaugurated in Rovereto next summer and will help to enhance one of the most important Asian artistic personalities of the twentieth century. Sgarbi's evening on Antonio Canova will also be an opportunity to define the contents of a new exhibition that we would like to set up at the Museo delle Carceri, also curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. The cultural offer of the city is therefore always enriched with new proposals in the name of quality and with a strong media imprint".
Vittorio Sgarbi tells the life, passions and works of Antonio Canova: acclaimed in life, loved by the powerful, victim of decisive criticisms such as that of Roberto Longhi, rediscovered in the twentieth century. Sgarbi, with his eloquence, restores Canova to his greatness in continuity with Raphael, both architects of a rebirth of classical values. From the Italic Venus to the Three Graces, from the Peace of Kiev – which we cannot see today because it is threatened by bombing in Ukraine – to the embrace of Cupid and Psyche, up to the portrait of a mysterious woman hitherto unpublished. A journey that shows not only the greatness and uniqueness of Canova, but also how much the genius of Possagno will be a reference point (more or less conscious) of the art to come.
"Canova's art is a complex and almost elusive thought, capable, however, of evoking childhood traumas, love disappointments, repressed erotic attractions, melancholic regrets, 'heroic furies', creating, sometimes, a real epic of life and death, resolved in the sign of Redemption - writes Vittorio Sgarbi - Much of that Canova has been lost; only the word of the scholar can evoke it, resorting to suggestive parallels with the poetry of Keats and Foscolo, or with the music of Beethoven, to restore, thus, to the artist all the sense of his great enterprise."
The event is organized by the Municipality of Asiago in collaboration with DuePunti Eventi. Tickets are available online and at the points of sale of the Ticketone circuit and at the tourist office in Piazza Carli in Asiago.
