Educational farms

Fienili di Casa Snaidar

The Barns of Casa Snaidar tell of a time when hay was life: fodder for livestock, natural insulation for houses, padding for pillows and mattresses. Large spaces were needed to store the mowed and dried grass of the summer. Then the abandonment of the mountain and the arrival of round balers led many barns to deteriorate or be lost.

Today, thanks to a careful functional recovery that enhances larch wood and local stone, these environments are once again lived in and shared with those who are curious to discover the history and nature of our mountains.

The proposed activities

Through activities of experiences in the environment, excursions with nature guides and Educational Farm workshops, the Barns of Casa Snaidar rediscover their role as support points, safe refuges in case of bad weather and places where you can breathe the alpine tradition between Veneto and Trentino.

They are not just spaces for schools and families: the proposals dedicated to groups of adults include team building, bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthdays and moments of conviviality.
The idea is simple and authentic: to have fun experiencing mountain life, from cheesemaking to distillation, up to the collection and recognition of mushrooms, herbs and roots.

Typical day:

After meeting at the Piazza di Roana, you enter the forest of the Plateau to immerse yourself in the nature of the mountain. Here, step by step, we will get to know the herbs, flowers, mushrooms and animals that populate this world.
It will be possible to pass through other farms, where the difference between dairy and beef cows will be explained, you will meet the calves grazing, you will touch straw and hay and you will learn to distinguish fodder based on their scent.
Once at the Barns of Casa Snaidar, fun activities await you according to the chosen program: whether it is chopping wood or distilling herbs, or trying your hand at bees to pick honey in honeycombs with your bare hands, little changes...
An atmosphere of serene relaxation envelops the district immersed in the green mountains of the Asiago Plateau, you just have to leave stress at home and immerse yourself in the magic!
Based on the number of activities agreed, half a day or the full day will be filled.
For lunch there are spaces to have your picnic both outdoors under a pergola, and indoors, in case of uncertain weather.
In about 10 minutes on foot you return to the cars with another easy walk to the driveway or using a path.

Children's workshop:

After a short walk in the surroundings you will discover what clay is and how it can contain water. Other natural material such as leaves, needles and twigs will also be collected... that back at the Barns the young participants will transform into small mountain pasture pools, working the clay and plant material as mountain farmers did to allow their herds to drink, despite the karst nature of the area. Once the work is finished, there will be a litmus test: only those who manage to make their mini-puddle contain a glass of water will be able to get on the bus to go home! (duration about 90 minutes)

Workshop for families:

After a brief explanation on the Mushroom Kingdom - touching on biology, history, uses, dangers - the participants will be divided into two teams: the adults and the children. The adults will have about 50 wooden mushrooms available; on these, each parent will write the name of the children and will have to hide them in a wooded field of about 2000 square meters. In the meantime, the little ones will stay at the Barns and taste the various types of honey, then they will go out in search of mushrooms, each with their own basket. The winner will be the one who picks the most mushrooms and there will be extra points for those who find mushrooms with their name on them. (duration about 2h)

Workshop for adults:

During the initial walk, medicinal and aromatic plants will be collected according to the indications given; once at the Barns of Casa Snaidar, the herbs collected, their properties and their uses will be explained. A part will be infused in grappa to make it a "witty souvenir" of the day; the others will be placed in a distiller. With the essential oil and hydrosol it will be possible to produce a soap or a cream using bee products, such as honey and wax. (duration about two hours plus the walk)

Routes

Below are five routes all simple, but of different lengths, which touch or start from the "Barns of Casa Snaidar", to better appreciate the history and nature in which they are located, the rural architecture, our heritage of cultures and traditions, among which the Teutonic influence of the Cimbri stands out.

Roana di Sotto - Untar Robaan

A short tour through the woods and pastures of the original nucleus of Roana... where the names of the places suggest stories of yesterday and today, admiring valleys and mountains as far as the eye can see, while the tinkling of grazing cows will be the soundtrack together with the numerous birds of the thermophilic forest.

Ancient Streets - Alte begale

Today it is deer, roe deer and grazing cows that pass through certain paths...

Once upon a time it was men who, in order to move, did not need wide roads but strong legs and shoulders, to carry with their baskets the little they needed to live up here.

Tunkelbald

The term indicates a dark, almost black forest... despite the green fir trees! The deep walls of the Val d'Assa make the route shady, making it ideal during the summer. The route touches the site where prehistoric graffiti are still visible and reaches the Roana bridge, which can be admired in all its majesty from the bottom up.

The ways of water

Toponymy tells us of marshy places where there is always moss (Mosele), of sites where water flows (Prunno) and where water flows without immediately disappearing into the bowels of the earth (Rendela). Where there is water there is life, the first houses; there is energy, the mills; you can resist sieges, the ancient fortification of Kestele.

Stoan Platten

It is the name that is given to the stone slabs that are still found here and there to indicate the paths and properties... a sign of a time when the forest was so sparse that no fences could be made, and a garrison of a culture that, however simple, already knew many principles of physics, chemistry and geology.
