On the occasion of the centenary of the glorious days of Cengio, Cesuna and Magnaboschi, 4 June 5, 2016 and will take place in Asiago the 32 ' Gathering of the National Association of Grenadiers of Sardinia.
Among the many episodes of heroism that marked the participation of Grenadiers to World War I, one of the most famous is certainly the staunch defense of .
On June 3, 1916, on theplateau of Asiago, the enemy launched a massive offensive against the positions defended by Grenadiers, commanded by Captain Frederick Morozzo della Rocca.
Attacked by overwhelming forces, by number and means, the grenadiers held out heroically to repeated attacks, until now no more victuals and ammunition, ended up engaging in a furious melee with their assailants and to jump into the void, dragging the foes, which were entwined in a suicide flight up to the bottom of the Val d'astico.
Since then, the abyss of Monte Cengio took the name "" and in memory of this episode of heroism, the 2 Grenadier battalion changed its name to "Cash".
On 4-5 June, a hundred years after these tragic events, they will remember those who gave their lives for a more just Italy.
INFORMATION ON GRENADIERS
The granatieri di Sardegna are the oldest European Ordinance Corps. They were formed by Duke Charles Emmanuel of Savoy on 18 April 1659 in Turin.
The story of the grenadiers goes hand in hand with that of Italy from the small Duchy of 1659 to Republic of today.
At present gives its name to a Rome-based brigade consisting of the 1° Regiment Grenadiers of Sardinia and from Regiment Lancieri di Montebello.
The 1° Regiment Granatieri di Sardegna participated in international peace missions in Somalia, Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Afghanistan.
The Brigade, after recent international commitments aimed at ensuring peace in Lebanon, will cooperate with law enforcement, the operation safe streets as regards the territories of Rome.
It is present at the gathering with music service revolver, a Grenadier company and the war flag of the Grenadier Regiment 1.
The Granatieri di Sardegna Brigade is commanded by Gen. B. Gaetano Lunardo.
The 1° Regiment Granatieri di Sardegna is commanded by Col. t. ISSMI Raffaele Morello.
THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION GRANATIERI DI SARDEGNA
Founded in Milan, on April 14, 1912, it has a national Executive, based in Rome, and 134 sections throughout the country coordinated by provincial and regional Centres.
Subscribers are about 3,200.
The Association is headed by Gen. D. (aus.) Cristina Gabriela.
