THE 5 FINALISTS OF THE CAMPIELLO PRIZE

FABIO BACA' - NOVA (Ed. Adelphi)

Fabio bac nova

Of the human brain, Davide knows what he learned at university, and uses in his job as a neurosurgeon. So far it has been enough for him to neutralize the annoying background noises and modest threats of the non-electrifying life he leads in suburban Lucca: his wife's vegan extremism, for example, or the inexplicable landing in the garden of an aboriginal boomerang coming out of nowhere. But in those familiar and sedated sounds hides a more sinister vibration, which suddenly any pretext – an argument at the traffic light, a decibel quarrel with a neighbor – risks making unbearable. It is what tries to make Davide understand his new, enigmatic teacher, Diego: what counts, and often explodes in the most ferocious way, is how much of the brain, whatever it is, we do not know. Or you prefer not to know.

ANTONIO PASCALE - THE FIG LEAF. STORIES OF TREES, WOMEN AND MEN (Ed. Einaudi)

Antonio pascale la foglia di fico storie di alberi donne e uomini

What does this book tell? Of a man who the more he lives the more he forgets, the more he desires the more he breaks down, the more he reads and learns, the more he finds himself confused and afraid: a bit like everyone. For this reason, look for something stable, clearly visible orientation points. Only he, unlike many, turns to plants, building a sort of atypical novel, in which each episode is like a journey (in childhood, in time, with women). After all, these magnificent creatures have been here since long before us and will be the last to die. Plants are lighthouses, they contain millennial, essential, clear symbols. They manage to challenge adversity and therefore offer us a model of resistance, because with tenacity they show the power of contradictions: the desire to live and love (expressed by the cherry tree) that can cause frustration and insecurity; the strength (of the oak) that can abandon us instantly, throwing us into despair; democracy as a process of adaptation between depth and surface (the olive tree); the need for a rite of passage (wheat), a journey that includes a death to be reborn. This book is a horoscope, a seismograph, a time machine, as well as a kind of botanical of feelings. On the other hand, plants are an exceptional tool to face our mysterious, funny, intricate nature: they resemble us more than we would have ever believed. In the world there are plant experts and there are writers: then there is Antonio Pascale, a passionate connoisseur of nature, one of the most appreciated storytellers of his generation. Like no one else knows how to question trees, listening to their history and intrinsic beauty.

DANIELA RANIERI - UPDATED ROAD OF ALL MY KISSES (Ed. Ponte alle Grazie)

Daniela ranieri stradario aggiornato di tutti i miei baci

A woman in perpetual dialogue with herself and with the world draws a map of her obsessions, of her relationship with love and with the body, a reservoir of hypochondria and neuroses: Daniela Ranieri's new novel is a lucid and hyperrealistic diary, in which every detail, every jolt of inner life is treated at the same time as scientific data and wound of the soul. From the Covid-19 pandemic to the daily life of Rome, everything is made the subject of ironic and stormy narration, but especially love relationships: the many facets of Eros – the meeting, the flirtation, the pleasure, the wrong cohabitations, the violence, the idealization, the addiction, the pure love – are gutted in the incomparable style of the author, a mixture of torment, resentment, irony mixed with the great European literature (and not only). And perhaps it is precisely the language of Daniela Ranieri the real protagonist of this updated Stradario of all my kisses, a language rich in Gaddian echoes, irritations à la Thomas Bernhard, quotes, and at the same time disturbingly direct and unheard of, a language whose ability to name and approach things is equal only to its power in destroying them. Daniela Ranieri's Lo Stradario is not just a novel: it has the substance of a living body that inhabits the world, of a voice that envelops and persuades with the strength of great literature.

ELENA STANCANELLI - IL TUFFATORE (Ed. The ship of Theseus)

Elena stancanelli il tuffatore

In the diver, elegance and passion for risk coexist. Raul Gardini had learned as a boy to dive from the pier in Ravenna. Handsome, seductive, always tanned, acquired heir of one of the most powerful Italian industrial families, he had the ambition to change the rules of the game and the unscrupulousness to do so. Driven by the desire, by the obsession to go straight and faster towards solving any problem. At any cost.  The story of an entrepreneur who left Ravenna to conquer the world enters the life and memories of the writer, intertwines the songs of Fabrizio De André, moves against the background of a Romagna province between Fellini's ghosts, heroic myths, sudden ascents and ruinous falls. Around, the dreams of glory of a country that looks to the man of providence with hope first, and with suspicion then. Until everything collapses. And the diver remains up there, alone, suspended in flight between life and death.

BERNARDO ZANNONI - I MIEI STUPIDI INTENTI (Ed. Sellerio)

Bernardo zannoni i miei stupidi intenti

This is the long life of a marten, told in her own hand. Among the trees of the woods, the grassy hills, the underground burrows and the countryside subjugated by man, the story of an animal different from all is revealed. Archy was born one winter night, together with her brothers: her mother killed her partner, and she finds herself having to raise them alone. The animals in this book talk, use the dishes for food, crockery, tables, beds, light fires, but their world remains a struggle for survival, hard and ruthless, as indeed is nature. They are moved by necessity and instinct, the strongest dominates and those who lose must make do. It is precisely sensing the weakness of her son that the mother barters Archy for a hen and a half. His new master is called Solomon, and he is an old fox full of secrets, who lives on top of a hill. These changes will upset Archy's life: the stolen loves, the daily cruelty of living, the present and the past time will manifest themselves to his eyes with incredible force. Between terror and wonder, with the relentless passing of the seasons and the spur of new desires, mysteries and secrets will open up between his paws. Archy will be less and less animal, a silent miracle in the forests, an anomaly. To counterbalance, between the pages of this book, the miracle of an enthralling narrative, which accompanies the reader in a dimension no longer human, just when he asks him in front of the essential questions of our being men and women. My Stupid Intentions is an ambitious and clear novel, and was written by a boy of only twenty-five years. As a sign of hope, of the future, for those who live on books.
