Adriatic twinning Asiago-Venice, September 16, 2012-15

On 15-16 September 2012 will be held in Asiago the Twinning Adriatic Venice Asiago-2012. This will be the second part of the twinning started in Venice on 19-20 may with the Festa della Sensa.

On that occasion a delegation of representatives of the municipal administration of Asiago were guests of Venice for the historic "marriage" with the sea. From that meeting and for a period of one year, there will be various events to seal the ancient bond that joins Venice to Asiago and its plateau. Saturday and Sunday will be a delegation of Venice to be a guest of our city.

"The marriage of Venice with the sea", how do you define the twinning with the Serenissima, recalls and draws the "Covenant of commitment" that the lagoon city and the plateau signed in 1404 more veneto (1405 according to the current schedule) and that lasted for a few centuries, until June 29, 1807, during which time theAsiago plateau was presented as a sort of Federal Republic called "Regency of 7 Municipalities".

Was kind of a Democratic Republic between the eight municipalities, where, in the decisions of common administration, everyone had the right to vote without discrimination as dictated by noble titles, wealth or poverty.

The report was based on a "Covenant" which provided for the obligation of the Regency to guard the borders and prevent any invasions from the North as well as the modest lump sum payment of a tribute to the Serenissima. In this way the plateau enjoyed self-government and total exemption of taxes, direct or indirect. The plateau also supplied the Serenissima of lumber used to build ships. In this regard, it recalls the gonfalone, located at the Hall of the Palazzo Municipale di Asiago, which gave Venice in the 17th century the seven common thank-you for plentiful timber donated to Venice for the construction of the ships used in the war against the Turks.

The strong bond which joined Asiago in Venice over time can be seen also in the construction of the Palazzo Municipale di Asiago, which was rebuilt after World War I, when Asiago was completely razed by bombing, and was inaugurated on September 21, 1929 by Prince Umberto di Savoia. The municipality offers Venetian specialties representing not only the strong alliance between the plateau and the Venetian Republic, but also the pride of this membership. The Bell Tower of the Town Hall is dominated by a characteristic of Asiago marching lion that recovers the exact representation of that represented the old banner donated by Serenissima to Seven common after the mid-1600 's, followed by the faithful. Also in the Council Chamber, as in many other rooms of the Town Hall, there are Murano glass chandeliers.
