Antonella viola la via dell equilibrio

Saturday 5 August 2023, at 5:30 pm, the virologist Antonella Viola presents her book "La via dell'equilibrio - Scienza dell'invecchiamento e della longevità" (ed. Feltrinelli), in Pazza San Marco a Enego.

In the interesting book, Antonella Viola tells the biological and evolutionary reasons for aging, a universal experience, which each of us goes through in his own way, with his own body, according to different times.

"You cannot reject the passing of time, but you can welcome it with the right posture. To be sustainable long-lived."

Staying young is one of our greatest chimeras. The average life span has lengthened and our culture is constantly moving forward the threshold at which we consider ourselves elderly.

There are scientific theories and false theories, diets and manuals that tell us how we must keep fit, how we must treat our body: all this makes it very difficult to understand, and even accept, how and why our body changes over time.

It is the first step to take if we want to accommodate this phenomenon by regulating our habits and our lifestyle. Why do we age? Why is it that at a certain point women's biological time ends? While age is easy to reveal, how is biological age determined? Is there a time when the body begins to age? Science has always questioned itself. Our organism changes since we are born. From the first days it needs to stay in balance, regenerating tissues and repairing wounds.

Real aging, however, is linked to loss of function and exposes us to a greater risk of developing diseases. Changes accumulate over time and make us more fragile and vulnerable. Yet, not all signs related to aging are deleterious to our health. White hair is not a health problem, nor does it make us less strong. The same applies to wrinkles. And we often spend more time and resources trying to hide these harmless signs than keeping our muscles strong or our hearts healthy.

Finding our balance means focusing on prevention and dysfunctional signs, learning not to reject time, but to welcome it.

The meeting is part of the exhibition "Aperitif with the author".
