THE BOOK: THE CEMETERY OF VENICE (ed. Newton Compton)

Violence could submerge Venice and dye its waters of blood and death. The first investigation by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto.

Venice, 1725. While a smallpox epidemic claims victims among the population, one of the most illustrious women in the city is found with her chest torn in the black and icy waters of the Rio dei Mendicanti. In a climate of growing tension, Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, is summoned by the State Inquisitors, suspicious of one of his recent works, which portrays precisely that infamous place: is there perhaps a link between the painter and the murder? While, distraught, he is leaving the Doge's Palace, Canaletto is stopped and brought before the doge, also interested in that painting, the Rio dei Mendicanti. In the painting there is something that, if revealed, could seriously embarrass an important Venetian family: a nobleman, portrayed in one of the most popular and plebeian places in Venice. Why was he in such a place? Canaletto receives from the doge the order to find out and report directly to him. The investigation – which at first frightens him and then, slowly, captures him – leads him, however, to frequent apparently illustrious environments in which obscure rites seem to be consumed, and in which ambiguous figures wander, from the past shrouded in mystery. What secrets are hidden in the Venetian palaces? What truths would be better buried?
