THE BOOK: I DO IT FOR ME - BEING MOTHERS WITHOUT THE MYTH OF SACRIFICE (ed. Bur)

Every Tuesday the psychotherapist Stefania Andreoli keeps on her Instagram profile a column of questions and answers. Here there are stories, current events and many doubts of parents. Moms, mostly. Disoriented, balanced, creative, willing, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but all united by an ambition: to make the right choices. Right, yes, but for whom? Since becoming a mother, it seems implied that the only acceptable reason for any daily and life decision is "I do it for my son". "I do it for me" is a phrase that sounds selfish, unworthy for a mother. The reasons are historical, cultural, linked to the false myths of sacrifice and unconditional love and to a distorted interpretation of the famous maternal instinct. The pressure is strong: to leave work; to neglect interests, friendships and the couple's relationship; to feel guilty for a couple of hours at the hairdresser "taking time away from the family". In short, to say goodbye to a part of oneself. In this book Andreoli overturns the old beliefs and proposes the idea that the experience of motherhood can add, and not take away, richness to the female identity. Only by "doing it for herself", each finding her own personal way of being a mother – different from the others because it is the result of her own history as a person – will it be possible to free motherhood, making it healthy, contemporary and really useful for the growth of a child and for the future of society.
