CuCu Festival 2023: the street art festival of the Municipality of Roana

From Wednesday 23 to Sunday 27 August 2023, Roana and all its picturesque hamlets will be transformed into an open-air stage, welcoming the traditional and highly anticipated "CUCU FESTIVAL", the International Festival of street art, promoted and coordinated by the Municipality of Roana and organized by the Cultural Association Arci Carichi Sospesi with the collaboration of the Proloco of the six hamlets of the Cimbrian territory.

Building on the success of the previous ones, this XIII Edition also promises to transform the squares, streets and even the woods of Roana, Mezzaselva, Cesuna, Canove, Treschè Conca, and Camporovere, into a widespread stage, where contemporary circus shows, Chinese pole, acrobatics, clowning, vertical dance and music will take place.
Street artists from all over the world, from Italy to Spain, from France to Peru and Argentina, will enchant residents and tourists with their amazing performances.

«The CucuFestival is an event dedicated to street art that in the Municipality of Roana takes on unique characteristics thanks to the desire to perform performances both involving the squares of our six hamlets, each different in history and peculiarities, and involving natural elements such as trees and meadows in suggestive places in the middle of nature. - says Cesare Azzolini, Councilor of the Municipality of Roana with responsibility for Culture - This, together with an organization that brings news and different artists every year, make CucuFestival a very popular event and followed for years by many tourists but also residents of all ages. A show not to be missed».

On the occasion of the centenary of his birth could not miss a tribute to the genius of Italo Calvino. Invisible Threads is dedicated to him, a contemporary circus show by the 6TU Collective that will premiere the CUCUFestival at the Roana Lake. Thanks to the reinterpretation of some of his essays and novels, including Le città invisibili, Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore, Le cosmicomiche and Lezioni americane, the artists will make the spectators protagonists of realistic and imagined stories and scenarios linked together by an invisible thread.

There will be two performances from Argentina this year. In Will you marry me? the acrobatics on the Chinese pole of the CIA Derecha Izquerda will tell us about a troubled marriage proposal between a lover and his beloved, who does not want to know, neither about him nor about marriage.
Gradually, tango, Latin American rock and ballet are the ingredients with which the Duo Laos, in Otros Aires, wants to represent freedom of expression and the importance of dedication and persistence in following their ideas with enthusiasm and tenacity.

A timeless bohemian universe, where acrobatics and tightrope walking are the protagonists, is the setting in which the public will be dragged during Copa-Copìn by the Spanish Cia Langostura, three acrobats engaged in weighing life to the rhythm of wine in a suburban club where everything seems possible between humor and complicity, games and illusions.

The artist French Max Maccarinelli will introduce us to the surreal and clownish clochard Arthur. Between stacked garbage and improvised carts, our protagonist turns into a skilled cook and a real restaurant magically takes shape before his eyes, between impossible recipes, objects that come alive, steaming pans and gimmicks poised between the absurd and the comic.

The Italian team is also very large this year. In a world where dreams seem increasingly fragile and ephemeral, the two Italian-Peruvian protagonists of Cometa Circus move with their language made of acrobatic evolutions and suspended objects that will infect the spectators with their tropical rhythm, leaving a trail of light in their imagination.

Music is at the heart of Sax-Oh! Filippo Brunetti's orchestra explores a new sound, visual and comic universe, aiming at the reinterpretation of the traditional musical clown, through the practice of "improvised free music" and the constant search for links with clowning and its philosophy.

Given the place where the CUCU Festival takes place, two performances could not miss with nature at the center, to admire, preserve and love. In Soul of Nature by Artemakia the "Keepers of Ancient Forests" will accompany the protagonist on a journey full of important themes to talk about human impact, the relationship between man and wildlife and the missed opportunities in the fight against the beginnings of climate change.
Finally, do not miss the performance of the Il Posto Company that on the occasion of the Festival will bring a traveling site-specific performance divided into three stages specially set up in the SelvArt forest in Mezzaselva: To the moon and back. The vertical dance show is inspired by the surrealism of Magritte, De Chirico, Dali, Kush a sequence of choreographic actions whose fil rouge is nature and dream with the intent to show the viewer a different reality that exists in an untouchable universe.
