BOOK "DEI VIZI E DELLE VIRTU'" - Rizzoli
In Padua, in the Scrovegni Chapel, one of the greatest masterpieces of Western art, Giotto tells the path of human salvation through the stories of Jesus and Mary on the walls and the Last Judgment on the counter-façade. In the lower register, in black and white as if they were panels in bas-relief, Giotto paints the four cardinal virtues and the three theological to the right of Christ the judge, and to the left seven vices that represent the vices of the virtues. Precisely to these pairs of opposites – injustice-justice, inconstancy-fortitude, anger-temperance, foolishness-prudence, infidelity-faith, jealousy-charity, despair-hope – the new conversation between Pope Francis and Don Marco Pozza is dedicated.
Virtues are the paths that lead to salvation, vices those that end in perdition:"Virtues make you strong, they push you forward, they help you to fight, to understand others, to be just, even-handed. Vices, on the other hand, bring you down. Virtue is like vitamin: it makes you grow, move on. Vice is essentially parasitic." Reflecting on these issues serves to "understand well in which direction we must go, why both vices and virtues enter into our way of acting, of thinking, of feeling".
For this reason, each chapter is enriched by a text by Pope Francis that deepens a theme of dialogue and a life story that Fr. Marco Pozza has derived from his experience as chaplain of the prison of Padua. Because in daily life vices and virtues always proceed intertwined, and this book is a path that allows us to rethink together the difficult and necessary task of discernment between good and evil.
