If you have picked up this book it is because on 1 March 2021, while Italy was in the midst of the pandemic and it was essential to get the vaccination campaign off the ground, the Presidency of the Council chose as extraordinary Commissioner for the Covid-19 emergency a general of the Alpini.
So Italians learned about Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, his uniform and his hat with a pen. The Commissioner wasted no time in talking about himself. He does so for the first time in this book, meeting Beppe Severgnini.
The co-authors have seen each other many times, they have known their families and students. The result is the story of "a southern suburban boy" who, after high school in Potenza and the Military Academy in Modena, follows the advice of the colonel who commanded the district of his city: "Francis, you must go in mountain artillery, because there things are done seriously. And then we in Potenza are mountaineers...».
So he becomes alpine, and the idea of doing things seriously is the principle that guides his career, from the difficult missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan to the Army Logistics Command.
Even in his new role as Commissioner and coordinator of the vaccination campaign, he wanted to do things seriously. It means making decisions based on knowledge, competence, common sense and precision. It means changing strategy if the situation requires it. It means moving between politics, administration, health. It means understanding which people to trust and which to distrust. It means getting angry and then letting it pass ("Every now and then my vein comes out!" he confesses). It means knowing how to listen, motivate and work in a team. "Italy really has everything, it just has to learn to put it together." This is the task that an Italian like General Figliuolo has given himself.
FRANCESCO PAOLO FIGLIUOLO
Born in Potenza, resident in Turin, general of the army corps, he commanded the Italian contingent in Afghanistan and the NATO forces in Kosovo.
He was the logistics commander of the Army and today leads the Joint Top Operational Command.
On 1 March 2021, he was appointed Extraordinary Commissioner for the Covid-19 emergency.
