BOOK "MARIO RIGONI STERN - A PORTRAIT" - Editori Laterza

November 1, 2021 marks the centenary of the birth of Mario Rigoni Stern, one of the greatest storytellers of our twentieth century. His books have fascinated several generations of readers, attracted by the important themes told: the natural world and the mountains, the stories of war and civil ethics. The clear and communicative style, despite the richness of words, makes his stories pleasant to read and evocative.

The book by Giuseppe Mendicino, dedicated to the writer of Asiago, wants to be a guide to his stories, his mountains and his principles, more current than ever.

The first part tells of his youth, between the plateau of the Seven Municipalities and the Alpine peaks, ofthe military training and the three war fronts (Western Alps, Greece, Russia) up to the imprisonment in the German concentration camps and to regain possession of his life, after the dramatic experiences lived over a few years.

The second part is divided between theintroduction to his most important books,The Sergeant in the Snow, The Forest of the Urogalli, History of Tönle, and some thematic chapters dedicated to friendship with Primo Levi andNuto Revelli,to the love for his plateau and for some peaks of the Alpine arc, to the passion for the natural environment, the world of woods and animals. His ethical and civil convictionsare also deepened, clear and shareable at all latitudes: the courage to say no to every abuse and injustice perpetrated towards men and nature, the ideal of responsible and supportive freedom, impatience for rhetoric.

A book, this, which also wants to be an invitation to follow its tracks, to visit the places evoked in his stories: Rigoni Stern himself repeatedly expressed the hope that readers, after reading one of his books, would retrace his paths, crossing their emotions with those of the writer.

The sergeant who leads his men through the Russian steppes to the house huts. The eternal explorer of the splendid plateau of Asiago, where the wonders of nature coexist with the traces of the destructive work of man at war. The great storyteller who knew how to restore literary dignity to the life of the humble and the forgotten by history. This was Mario Rigoni Stern and this book tells us about it 'in whole part' a century after its birth.
