MEN IN THE TRENCHES
It is a show by and with Giacomo Rossetto produced by Teatro Bresci and Arteven.
Trenches were one of the symbols of the Great War. When the various European governments decided to take the field, everyone was convinced that it would be a quick war in which it was essential to exploit the temporal value.
Instead, after a few weeks, the different European fronts stabilized and hundreds of kilometers of trenches began to be dug, from the north of France to present-day Poland.
These long corridors, just under two meters deep, immediately appeared also on the Italian front, in the plains, on the karst plateau and in the high mountains, in the middle of the snow. It is therefore natural to wonder how the trenches were built, what was the life of a soldier inside them, how they slept, how they ate, and what were the everyday problems.
In many testimonies you can read the moods, the emotions, the fears, the desire to escape from that hell. But you can also catch the chronicles of real life, of how this coexistence was organized on the front, close to one's enemy.
Thus the harsh rules imposed by the commands and the punishments for those who refused to fight are discovered.
But we discover the great humanity of the simple, of those sent to die drunk, of their friendships and their courage.
The simplest and most terrible definition of the life of a soldier during the First World War is given by the poet Ungaretti, also a soldier in the Great War, through his poem "Soldati": "You are like autumn on the trees the leaves".
