Thursday, August 18, 2016, new appointment with the exhibition "Aperitif with author", organized in collaboration with the Library reached the point of Asiago: to present the book "The Strafexpedition-1916 Austro-Hungarian offensive in the story of the protagonistswill be Paul Pozzato and Alessandro Massignani.

The meeting will begin at 17.30 hours, at the Council Chamber of Asiago, and will be an excellent opportunity to deepen, with the same authors, various aspects of theaustro-Hungarian offensive of spring, which this year marks the 100th anniversary.

The Strafexpedition

If there was an event that characterized the great war in the mountains of the Veneto and Trentino, was undoubtedly the Austro-Hungarian offensive of June 1916, better known as Strafexpedition. From Rovereto to Borgo Valsugana, Folgaria in Asiago "left a roar shook the mountains in the afternoon of 14 may, became more frequent and more intense at night, infocando the tops"; She described those moments the journalist Giuseppe De Mori, vivid picture of the terrible artillery fire sparked in those days.

The Strafexpedition constituted a focal event during the war, not only because it was the first real battle on a mountain face, but also because, with his failure, he determined, at least in part, the fate of the conflict doing scuttle the idea of Austrian commands a happy and quick end of war on the Italian front.

Through the translation of private diaries and regimental colors the curators have therefore been able to reconstruct in detail the entire front of the operations of the Habsburg army in the Highlands of Folgaria, Lavarone, Tonezza and seven municipalities. There is also the precise comparison with Italian sources in relation to the most important actions, and sometimes controversial, they saw involved the opposing sides.

Brief interview with Paolo PozzatoTelefonisti austriaci

The Strafexpedition is a sensitive issue, even a hundred years later that July 1916 where the Austrian decided to attack from Rovereto to Borgo Valsugana, Folgaria in Asiago for what was dubbed "punitive expedition" against former Italian ally.

Paolo Pozzato has addressed in the volume to be released on May 20 for the Publisher Itinera Projects: "the offensive of the spring of 1916 is one of the most vivid memories, much as plateau in Asiago and Posina and areas of Valdastico: witness the many songs yet known on the subject and even the President of the Republic who will travel to visit these areas in next may," says the author.

What was the incentive to write this book?
«It is more or less always the same research in recent years, the desire to make available to the Italian public, scholars seem less interested, the memories of the "other", at least the Austrian component against which we fought. The choice of 1916 is linked from one side to the anniversary, the other to the fact that this is a turning point for the Italian war both in terms of military, for the first time we are forced to the defensive, both politically by declaring war on Germany, and the Eclipse Salandra policy».

What do you think was the most important moment of this offensive?
"It is the very idea that the offensive was based, that is, to reach the plain idea representing a point of absolute weakness, because exposed to final failure in spite of all the partial victories."

Addestramento truppe austriacheFor those interested in World War I, the volume The Strafexpedition could be in any way a continuation of another book published by Itinera projects, the key of the plateau?
"The key is the most important analysis of one of the fighting and the loss of the mountain, the Portule, that Italians believed crucial to the defense of the whole plateau, here the view widens to the western slopes of the Val d'astico, alla conquista del Cengio and the invasion of the entire plateau».
