On Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., at the Institute of Cimbrian Culture in Roana (via Romeo Sartori, 20), the presentation of the book "Cronache di una casa chiusa" by Rossella Menegato, published by Biblioteca dell'Immagine, will be held. In dialogue with the author there will be Annalisa Zanon.
Set in the "La French" brothel in Trieste, the novel takes place in the years of Fascism and the Second World War, when brothels, rigidly regulated by the State, were the backdrop of female existences marked by poverty, violence and lack of alternatives.
Through the voice of Rosa and the other women who live and work within those walls, the author reconstructs with rare intensity the everyday life of a world guarded by the police and judged by respectability, up to the days of the Merlin law which in 1958 decreed the closure of brothels, forever changing the face of prostitution in Italy.
During the meeting, Annalisa Zanon will lead a conversation that will touch on the central themes of the book: the condition of women in brothels, the hypocrisy of a State that regulates and exploits what it officially condemns, the role of the Church and public morality, the possibility of finding, even in a brothel, forms of solidarity and resistance.
An event designed not only for those who love historical fiction, but for those who want to listen, through the words of the writer, to the forgotten lives of many women relegated "behind the door" of a closed house.
Admission is free subject to availability.
