BOOK "THE BREATH OF THE WOODS. The mountains of the city of Vicenza on the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities" - Cierre Edizioni
Preface by Gian Maria Varanini. With the collaboration of Tarcisio Bellò, Egidio Fontana.
Through the examination of unpublished documentation and procedural papers, this book reconstructs an authentic intrigue. In the thirteenth century the city of Vicenza possessed the so-called "high area" of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni: an impervious mountain range above the Valsugana that will become the subject of bitter clashes between Venetians and Imperials after the annexation of the Plateau to the Republic of Venice (1405).
In the mountains of Vicenza the pastures were rented to private tenants, while in the woods it was allowed to the inhabitants of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni to obtain wood for personal use.
Were these rules always respected? What happened when the city, at the end of the sixteenth century, began to encourage a policy of commercial exploitation of the woods? Why did the Seven Municipalities come to produce a false privilege through which to attribute ownership of the mountains of Vicenza?
This book reinterprets and rewrites a chapter of very delicate history relating to the relations between the city of Vicenza and the Regency of the Seven Municipalities. Against the background of the Venetian institutional panorama and within the broader coordinates of the international context, microhistory and macrohistory intertwine, to illustrate, in the final analysis, how the annexation to the Seven Municipalities of the mountains of Vicenza was reached.
