BOOK "THE EMPIRE AT HIGH ALTITUDE - THE ROMANS AND THE ALPS" - Einaudi

The Alps in Roman times:theater of military clashes, place of cultural contamination and junction of economic importance.

The Alps have been a territory, in many respects exemplary, of radical political, social and cultural transformations in the centuries in which Roman civilization unfolded. Priority to any historical discourse is to understand the vision that the ancient Romans had of the Alps and the peoples who inhabited them:marginal, difficult and inhospitable places; barriers in defense of Rome and the peninsula; hinges of communication with the transalpine reality; extreme spaces where the sacred and the sacrilegious met; imperial crossings laden with geopolitical implications; carriers of communications, businesses, ideas; places of resistance to defend the territory.

This fascinating volume does not have a chronological sequence. It follows the indispensable historical unfolding of important events with insights into material life, mentalities, social, economic and religious structures within which men and women who lived in the Alpine territory were formed and worked.
