DARK SKIES - FESTIVAL OF ASTRONOMY - Asiago, 12/22 May 2022

Dal 12/5/2022 al 22/5/2022
Astronomical Events
Festival dell'astronomia ad Asiago maggio 2022

Asiago will organize from 12 to 22 May 2022 its first edition of the Astronomy Festival, whose theme will be "Dark Skies", an initiative promoted by the City of Asiago in collaboration with the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Padua, Inaf - Astronomical Observatory of Padua and Arpa - and with the SKYSCAPE PROJECT  funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Interreg V – A Italy – Austria 2014-2020, which sees Asiago as a protagonist together with Cornedo all'Isarco (BZ), Talmassons (UD) and Tiroler Umweltanwaltschaft (an Austrian government body aimed at defending and protecting the environment). One of the objectives of this European project is to raise awareness among the population and tourists about the problem of light pollution , which is increasingly likely to prevent us from admiring the sky.

It will be a real full immersion with guided tours at the Asiago Astronomical Pole, exhibitions, themed theatrical performances , conferences, book presentations, educational workshops , excursions and events related to the themes of astronomy and the Skyscape project.

Second star on the right is a series of editorial guides edited by Bas Bleu and INAF - National Institute of Astrophysics, which leads to the discovery of the signs of the sky in the cities: works of art, such as Giotto's comet in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, scientific instruments, such as Galileo's telescope in Florence, architectures oriented according to astronomical phenomena, like Porta Felice in Palermo or Florence. Three guides dedicated to the cities of Padua, Florence and Palermo to rediscover the places through art, science and culture.

Leopoldo Benacchio - Senior scientist at the Astronomical Observatory of Padua, deals with the dissemination and teaching of astrophysics, topics on which he also holds a course at the Master in Science Communication at the University of Padua. He has been collaborating with Il Sole 24 ore for some time.

Chiara Di Benedetto - She deals with science and research communication projects, with particular attention to public engagement activities and the relationship between art and science. Accompanied by the voice of an expert figure, adults and children will be able to observe the spring sky, discover its constellations, planets and the Moon, seeing with their own eyes what is the impact of light pollution and how this risks preventing us from enjoying a unique spectacle, that of the starry sky, a unique source of wonder and knowledge.

Wearing the Cosmo Experience Virtual Reality Viewers it will be possible to immerse yourself in an incredible journey in the Universe, flying over immense structures and fascinating objects of the deep sky. You will remain suspended in the void like an astronaut and you will be able to walk on the surface of Mars. A fascinating and spectacular journey in which to let yourself be transported.

The landscape around them is rich and wild, the hand of man has not reached it, at least not entirely, and nature spontaneously follows its course, giving beautiful sunrises and sunsets, but also unstoppable rains and harsh winters. So these six people cross the lush Val Grande and experience the distance from everything that has to do with the intervention of man, and also with the need to possess everything, to satisfy every need, coming to wonder how much sense it makes to endanger the Earth to satisfy needs that are basically just ghosts.

Directed by Emanuele Caruso. A film with Giuseppe Cederna, Maya Sansa, Franco Berrino.

THE SKYSCAPE PROJECT

In 2021 Asiago becomes a stellar tourist destination thanks to the Skyscape project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Interreg V-A Italy – Austria 2014-2020, of which it is a partner together with Cornedo all'Isarco (BZ), Talmassons (UD) and the Tiroler Umweltanwaltschaft, an Austrian government body aimed at defending and protecting the environment.
This project foresees, in particular, the development of astro-tourism as a tourist product linked to the observation of the sky. At the same time, the Skyscape project aims to carry out an awareness campaign on the theme of light pollution, which increasingly represents a threat to man and the environment, as well as preventing the observation of the starry sky intended as a collective heritage to be preserved.
That of placing the observation of the sky as an attractive element for tourists and enthusiasts is a road already traveled by some places, both Italian and foreign, with excellent results. From this point of view, Asiago and the whole territory of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni have such characteristics to be able to position themselves as an astro-tourist destination of excellence. Not only the distance from large urban centers (combined with the ease of reaching the territory), but also the presence of two of the most important astronomical and astrophysical observatories on Italian soil.
