BOOK "PICCOLE PATRIE" - Edizioni Biblioteca dell'Immagine
I'm a journalist by chance, and I was surprised to find among the papers I was rummaging to put together this book a note from my father. It accompanied the gift of a Pelikan fountain pen and contained a wish: "To the future journalist, the father, with many affectionate wishes, offers the iron of the trade". My answer, with a handwriting and a signature still childish (Tonino) was vague: "With many thanks to my beloved dad I start to use the gift with the hope that it will bring me luck".
It was the gift for my fourteenth birthday, in 1962... It would take me many years – and many jobs – to realize that journalism could pay for my two passions: traveling and writing.
A baptism of fire – literally, because it was the time of the failed Sandinista insurgency in Nicaragua – marked me forever. And wherever I went, from the newspaper of my beginnings Lotta Continua to Panorama Mese, from Epoca to mediaset news, I was a war reporter, even if I never loved the definition, because it seems to me iettatoria and poor, together.
In Piccole Patrie I told everything that intrigued me: travel and people, wars and natural disasters, small stories and black chronicles, loves and adventures ... I am from Friuli and I have felt at home in many parts of the world, from Rome to Sarajevo, from Latin America to the Gulf: small homelands.
