Mercoledì dell'Astronomia: Le supernovae: fuochi d'artificio nel cosmo. Asiago 31 luglio 2013Wednesday of the Astronomy of Asiago, Supernovae, on the evening of 24 July

Wednesday, July 24 at the Lux Cinema of Asiago to 21.00 hours will be held the meeting "Wednesday of astronomy" titled: "supernovae: Fireworks in the Cosmos".

A supernova is a stellar explosion more energetic than a nova. The supernovae are extremely luminous and cause a radiation which can for short periods exceed that of an entire Galaxy.

During a period that can range from a few weeks to a few months a supernova emit as much energy as it is expected to issue the Sun during its entire existence.

The explosion expels much or all of the material that makes up the star at speeds that can reach 30000 km/s (10% of the speed of light), producing a shock wave that spreads in the interstellar medium. This translates into a gas bubble in the expansion that is called a supernova remnant.
