Live webcam on the Piana di Marcesina - from Rifugio Malga Ronchetto

This live webcam by Asiago.it, installed at the Rifugio Malga Ronchetto, shows a spectacular view of the splendid Piana di Marcesina, one of the most beautiful and magical places of the Asiago Plateau. It is a large plateau, located in the north-east of the plateau, with wide pastures and majestic woods of spruce, unfortunately hard hit by the violence of the Vaia storm in October 2018.

The Plain is very vast and extends between the province of Vicenza - where it mainly affects the municipality of Enego, but also those of Foza, Gallium and Asiago - and the autonomous province of Trento.

Marcesina is called the "Finland of Italy", for its vast spaces and especially for its harsh climate during the winter season. Due to its particular position and its conformation, despite being at an average altitude of just 1400 meters above sea level, here in winter very low temperatures are reached (on the first of March 2005 it has even recorded a minimum temperature of -34 ° C).

The plain also has other peculiarities from a naturalistic point of view, such as the presence of two peat bogs, called "Palù di San Lorenzo" and "Palù di sotto", ie protected humid environments where rare and endemic species develop, including carnivorous plants.

In Marcesina there are no urban settlements; the only buildings present are the alpine huts, the shelters and a hotel, in addition to the so-called "casoni", or ancient wooden and sheet metal buildings, which were once used by lumberjacks to shelter themselves.

To see, in the northern part of Marcesina, is the delightful church dedicated to San Lorenzo. The chapel, dating back to 1300, was destroyed during the Great War, except for the bell tower which remained almost intact, and was rebuilt in 1925. An ancient local legend tells that the Saint, invoked by the highland shepherds to defend the plain from the usurpers of valsugana, would have thrown hundreds of "shooting stars" to drive away opponents. The remains of these meteors would be the numerous round stones of various sizes that dot the Piana di Marcesina even today (and which in reality are boulders of morainic origin whose removal is prohibited). Near the church are still evident the remains of the former Italian war cemetery, which collected the remains of 2356 soldiers, dedicated to Lieutenant Raffaele Stasi.

Another curiosity to visit and photograph in Marcesina is the plaque placed on the façade of the Hotel Marcesina, which shows a famous quote by the Asian writer Mario Rigoni Stern, who loved the plain very much: "But will there still be lovers who on a winter night will be transported on a sleigh pulled by a generous horse to the plain of Marcesina soaked in moonlight? If they weren't there, how sad the world would be."

Marcesina is also rich in itineraries for excursions and walks to be covered on foot or by mountain bike, such as the Giro delle Malghe di Marcesina. Or if you are passionate about MTB or E-BIKE you can try your hand at the much more challenging Campomulo - Marcesina - Piazzale Lozze itinerary or in the Campomulo - Marcesina - Monte Lisser - Rifugio Barricata itinerary

Thanks to the live images of this webcam we can enjoy even from afar the peace and serenity of this place, where it is nice to go for a walk and relax away from the summer heat, surrounded by the spectacle of nature.
